Panic System
Panic is the horror layer's throttle, represented by an eye icon that opens and reddens as danger rises.
Rules (per wiki data)
- Rises: when the boat is enveloped in darkness at night; spikes hard when attacked (Night Anglers, Miasma, Jelly Bombs).
- Falls: in good lighting, during the day, and fully resets when resting at a town.
- Effects at high panic: chromatic aberration and screen distortion, obelisks activate, phantom sharks appear, the Monster Ray may begin hunting the player. Panic-based attacks can infect fish in the hold, locking them at 35% value (Dredge - Economy & Upgrades).
Common misconception
High panic does not increase aberration catch chance — that's driven by night (+3%), glow spots, and specific rods (Dredge - Aberrations). Worth noting because even a false player belief ("madness reveals the corrupted fish") reinforced the theme well enough to spread.
Why it's elegant
- Diegetic punishment. Greed isn't taxed with an abstract penalty (XP loss, respawn timer). The punishment is the horror game itself — hallucination threats that deal real hull/cargo damage. Fail state and genre content are the same object.
- Counterplay is economic. Lights reduce darkness exposure, but lights occupy grid cells that could hold cargo, and cost money that could buy engines. Safety is purchasable, and its price is the very profit you went out for.
- Soft, analog pressure. Panic is a gradient, not a timer. It supports "I can push a little further" reasoning — which is precisely the psychology the game wants to exploit.
- NPC reinforcement. The Mayor and townsfolk actively discourage night sailing and urge rest, especially when you dock at high panic — mechanical state surfaces as characterization (Dredge - Narrative & Theme).
Reference point
Structurally a descendant of sanity systems (Eternal Darkness, Darkest Dungeon, Don't Starve), but with a key difference: panic's hallucinations are physically real threats, not cosmetic fake-outs. The game never winks at you; the line between "in your head" and "in the water" stays deliberately blurred.
